Excerpt from General History of the Christian Religion and Church, Vol. 2 Having, through the kindness of the respected friend by whom I was first induced to engage in the present translation, the Rev. Dr. Robinson, of New York, obtained an early copy of the second edition of this volume, I have been enabled to incorporate a great part of the new matter which it contains with the text of my translation. The rest has been added in the form of notes at the end of the volume. The only places in which this translation does not exactly accord with the last edition of the original work, are the introductions to a few of the sections, and the section generally which relates to the emperor Julian. In the latter case, the difference lies chiefly in the arrangement of the matter: in the former, I have purposely adhered to the old edition, where the thoughts are substantially the same, but more briefly and simply expressed.
